The Weekend Academy works with people of all ages, opening up the facilities of
the Byam Shaw School of Art to our local communities in North London. Our
family drawing days and life drawing jams have brought to life the experience
of drawing for local young people, their families and carers.
The Weekend Academy at the Byam Shaw welcomes invitations to work in partnership with community groups, particularly those working with young people.
The Big Draw at the Byam Shaw
The Weekend
Academy’s first Big Draw at the Byam Shaw, 2002, won a National Drawing
Inspiration award from the Campaign for Drawing. People of all ages drew from ‘animated’ versions of famous paintings,
modelled by young actors from the National Youth Theatre. Byam Shaw students
were on hand to support and encourage participants to draw and exhibit their
work. Byam Shaw’s café, complete with Degas’ Absinthe
Drinkers, was open for refreshments.
Subsequent Big Draw days offered a tour through the history of drawing, with opportunities to draw from the skeleton, from dancers, boxers, and models in character costume, and to draw to live music.
