The Weekend
Academy is rooted in the diverse community of North London, and builds on
networks and partnerships with schools, colleges, youth and community
groups in the area.
The Weekend Academy hosts a variety of projects, initiatives and events, which
widen access to the college and the university.
We are proud of our commitment to work with people from a diversity of backgrounds
and to celebrate the creativity of all our participants.
The Weekend Academy has developed strong networks with disabled and D/deaf communities in London
We have initiated arts activities
with disabled people of all ages in our local area.
Byam Shaw School of Art numbers internationally respected disabled artists
among its alumni, including Yinka Shonibare, Lucy Jones and the late Meena
Jaffrey.
The Weekend Academy, under the WKD banner, is currently working primarily with schools and youth
We aim to give young people
involved with The Weekend Academy insights and an introduction into the realities
of future university study, and to possible careers in the creative arts.
We support access routes to education for young people from a wide range of
backgrounds.
Practising artists including Byam Shaw staff and alumni lead and support activities
with our target groups. Byam Shaw School of Art’s students work alongside
The Weekend Academy participants on The Weekend Academy programmes and events.
The Weekend Academy was set up in 2002 to open up the facilities of the Byam Shaw School of Art to the wider community
